 Backup Consolidation & Acceleration: goodbye backup window, hello centralized backup 
Not just faster but windowless backup for SANTap users is now a reality. Instead of backing up data the traditional way, directly from the actual source over the LAN, Synchronism facilitates direct backups of snapshots of data that is housed on the storage network. Since the backup processing burden is offloaded from application servers and backup traffic is removed from the local area network (LAN), backups are transparent to the live production environment. The need for backup windows is therefore eliminated. The backups themselves are also significantly faster and can be centrally managed with ease by one administrator.
Synchronism offers two methods for better backups: HyperTrac Backup, which leverages and enhances an enterprise’s existing backup server and policies, and ZeroImpact Backup, which consolidates third party backup software onto the Synchronism appliance itself for total centralization of the backup administration process.
Synchronism HyperTrac leverages the storage area network (SAN) to accelerate the backup and restore speed of existing third party backup software. Rather than relying on host-based backup agents to transfer the data over the LAN, HyperTrac enables ultra-high speed backups and restores over the SAN. HyperTrac provisions TimeViews (i.e., mountable TimeMark snapshot images) as mount points to a centralized backup server. Since the application server’s production disks are not impacted, backups can be performed at any time, even during production hours. Application servers see immediate benefits from the elimination of the CPU and memory overhead typically associated with host-based backup agents.
Synchronism ZeroImpact Backup (ZIB) facilitates high speed backup and restore by enabling third party backup software to perform online, full/ incremental, image-based backup/restore operations of SAN-based data directly from an Synchronism appliance. Image-based backup/restore allows administrators to easily manage their enterprise backup providing quick backup/restore of all their application servers with full data integrity.
As with other snapshot-based operations, both the Synchronism HyperTrac and Synchronism ZIB methods integrate with Storage Engine Snapshot Agents to minimize and manage application quiesce time during backups and to guarantee transactional integrity and point-in-time consistency of data for reliable, fast data restoration.
